I have had some absinthes that brought on that je ne sais quoi experience of such but they have not had the milky louche when I added water or ice. WTF??? Is this just my subjective bioassay or whatever you want to call it? The two that have been most remarkable in this respect to me are Le Tourment Vert (virtually no louche) and (my current fave) Mata Hari Absinthe Bohemian (that has a slight louche). Whaddaya think???

St. George absinthe

I just got a bottle from a friend (thanks!) of St. George 'sinthe ...

it's the darkest-green colored sinthe i've yet seen/had ...
Very powerful earthy herbal potion, it is ...... it leaves your tongue with that numb shimmery feeling/sensation which is always a good sign of good absinthe in my experience .....

There is "stinging nettle" in this absinthe, something not found in other absinthes usually ... it adds a darker, more earthy taste, I think ....

I would say that overall, this is the best 'Absinthe'(minus the thujone in real absinthe) that i've tried ....

Anyone else had it ? What do you think ?

It was on sale here, I guess, much less than the usual retail price of about $75 (too much in my opinion ) .

I know we've had threads about this in the past, but it's been awhile since anyone chimed in. My psychedelic biochemical friends say that they believe there's no "tiddly" effect, as I used to call it, from absinthe's thujone content. What do you say?

Any herbalists or others out there that can discern between true Wormwood and the Powis Castle hybrid? I've looked at pictures of both and can't really see the difference. My wormwood plants have been stunted from being rootbound and stressed. Makes it harder to verify identification.

Absinthe and the Bourgeois

I don't profess to be a true connoisseur. I am not one to pass judgement on anyone's personal preferences. Perhaps I'm a bit more studied than some, and I find some personal joy in being 'in the know' about certain aspects of Absinthe. But I try to be humble in my knowledge, for I'm well aware, I could learn something new at any given moment, and what I do know, in the scheme of things, is minimal.

That said...

I was at a bar the other night, a very fine establishment I might add. They had a few Absinthe cocktails on the menu and certainly seemed to know their stuff. They served St. George. My friend and I had a Sazerac, which was wonderful... we tried it prepared the 'traditional' way and we tried their 'modern' take on it... both fantastic. Anyway... my point. Since they highlighted Absinthe on the bar menu, we eavesdropped on the patrons who clearly didn't have a clue. They got all wriled up about it. Finally, one gal got the gumption to order it with her friends. The bartender brought over a beautiful fountain, and did a very nice job of presenting it... then, just before starting the water drip, he pulled out his Bic lighter and lit the sugar cube. My friend and I nearly lept from the bar in horror... 'what are you doing?!' He said 'I like to give it a nice carmelized flavor.' We shook our heads in disapproval and let him continue with his blasphemy.

We watched the georgous louche develop (full well knowing this girl would probably find it revolting because she was ordering it more on a dare than a genuine interest). Then, she sipped it. And of course, she hated it. I'm sure she didn't have a clue what to expect. Perhaps she expected something more akin to a Mint Julep? Her friends sampled it and they all grimaced. I asked her... 'would you like it better if it were sweeter? Because it's not a sin to ask the bartender to sweeten it up a bit'. She said she thought she'd like that... and the bartender then added some simple syrup (a very respectful hometown syrup brew). She sipped again and still hated it. Sharing amongst her friends, they eventually finished it.

My favorite moment... when one of her friends leaned over to me and asked 'so is it true that it's going to make her trip?' For a moment, I wanted to reply 'oh yes, and they sell acid and heroin behind the bar too if you ask real nice'. I told her 'no, your friend will be fine'.

Questions:

Am I a snob?

When you see a bartender do such a thing, is it inappropriate to call him out on it?

If someone tries it, and doesn't like it, is it okay to suggest they sweeten it up until they develop a taste for it?

And when some silly girl at the bar asks... 'is this going to make me trip?' do you tell her the truth, or do you just say 'yes, it will' then sit back and watch her freak herself out just to entertain yourself?

So, I have not yet had the pleasure of consuming absinthe and would like to change that. Does anyone know of a place to buy absinthe in Washington, or more specifically Seattle? Or is their a reliable and possible way to order it from afar. It seems so illusive. Maybe it is just something I will have to wait for, but if anyone has any suggestions......
Thanks

La Fee absinthe parisienne

Got a bottle of this recently thanks to a friend in the NYC area ...(I cannot get it in my state ) ...

first thing you notice is the unnaturally green color .
It is artificially colored and they admit so on the back label .
Smells a lot like Lucid but not as much wormwood aroma / fragrance ... a lot of fennel and angostura bitters - smell .

Has perhaps some added sugar as I tried some straight, a sip from a shot glass and there is unmistakeable sweetness there ...

The louche is really pretty disappointing for those who are louche-geeks ... im personally not so concerned about the dramatic nature of a louche but ... this one is pretty weak ...

Taste is again, on the fennel-y / licorice - y / angostura bitters side .... seems more complex than Lucid but is not as satisfying at the same time ... more of a graduated flavor profile than Lucid but still I think I prefer Lucid overall ...

After realizing that I was getting almost no thujone-buzz/effects ... I added some of my thujone extract which improved the buzz ten-fold ... it's just pastis/pernod with more coloring, otherwise ...

Will be in no hurry to drink this stuff again really ... but better than none ...

Review of Pernod Aux Plantes D'Absinthe Supereure

I found this at one of the Oregon State Liquor Stores in Portland, while shopping for a supply of 190 proof.

The price was US$64.95 – and there is no sales tax in Oregon.

The alcohol content is 68% by volume.

This product comes in a bottle made of green, almost blue glass.

These are the people that started it all, back in 1805. This product is made in France.

I immediately recognized the brand because my explorations of pastis had led me to encounter Pernod's anise liqueur. I also recognized that this bottle wasn't that product, and in perusing the label it occured to me that this was probably an absinthe that I hadn't yet tried.

Upon opening, the aroma was promising and my first pour was diluted with ice water but without sugar.

The liquid pours out as a pale green, consistent with Pernod’s anise liqueur. I was put off a little by the use of FD&C Yellow #5.

The louche was pearly and the aroma that was released was delightful.

The taste is an absolute delight, not too strong in any direction and sweet in its own right. Sugar this one if you want to, but try it at least once without sugar and see if you like it that way – you may be surprised.

The numbing of the lips and tongue went well, but wasn’t as strong as I expected.

This has now become my new personal favorite.

After reading the label again, I am forced to conclude that this is not the original pre-ban recipe. They state that this product is based upon the original recipe, not that it is the original. Oh, well.

Get it if you can find it.

Review of Trillium

I found this at one of the Oregon State Liquor Stores in Portland, while shopping for a supply of 190 proof.

The price was US$59.95 – and there is no sales tax in Oregon.

This product comes in a beautifully turned-out bottle, with graceful lines and a floral motif. The glass is dark green, almost brown. The cork has a wax seal.

This product is made by Integrity Spirits in Portland, Oregon.

The alcohol content is 60% by volume.

Upon opening, the aroma was promising, and my first pour was over crushed ice and diluted with water, but without sugar.

The product poured out with some difficulty for the first couple of pours – a problem that I attribute to the design of the bottle. I was able to pour the desired amount into a goblet, but I wasn’t happy with the uncontrolled spillage – at the end of the pour, the liquid traveled back along the neck of the bottle and dropped off outside of the glass. Please be careful pouring this product.

The liquid itself poured out as a pale green, a much lighter color than I expected.

The louche was strong from the melted ice, even before diluting with water and the aroma that was released was delightful.

The taste is well into the wormwood zone with an adequate anise component. The label states that the recipe also includes Damiana, which I don’t think I’ve seen in any other recipe. The lemon balm was overshadowed by the more dominant flavors and I couldn’t find it at all. I recommend that this product be sugared before drinking.

The numbing of the lips and tongue went well.

All-in-all, this is a solid and delightful entry.

Get it if you can find it.

Review of Leopold Brothers Absinthe Verte

I found this at BevMo while trying to replenish my supply of Grande Absente and Kubler.

The label states that it was made in Ann Arbor, Michigan, but a quick search on the internet shows that they’ve recently moved their distillery to Denver, Colorado.

Before you pooh-pooh an absinthe from Michigan, please note that they apparently grow a LOT of wormwood in Michigan. I’d be interested to know if the product made in Denver tastes any different.

The bottle made of clear glass and has a broad-shouldered shape reminiscent of an old medicine bottle. The color of the absinthe showed as a dark emerald green.

This product is from a small-batch craft distiller, and the label on my bottle was hand-numbered from batch “8”.

Upon opening, the aroma was promising, and my first pour was diluted with ice water drizzled over a single C&H cocktail sugar cube.

The louche went well and the aroma that was released was delightful.

The taste is well into the wormwood zone with an adequate anise component. I can see where some folks would like it with two sugar cubes.

The numbing of the lips and tongue went well.

All-in-all, this is a solid entry.

BevMo.com has this listed at US$75.99.

Get it if you can find it.

Buying Absinthe in SF?

A few Questions:
I would like to purchase a few bottles of Absinthe for an event coming up. I am wondering if anyone knows of any good sources in san francisco, or if it is still best purchased online. What are some reliable sites?
I have also read many debates on what the best brands are, and haven't come up with anything definitive. What is your favorite and why? I have been served Absinthe over the years and have always really enjoyed it, but have never bought my own, so I don't know where to start and don't want to end up with the low-grade stuff.
Any info would be greatly appreciated!

Thujone levels irrelevant?!

I hear a lot of talk about Thujone levels and how it relates to the classic absinthe "effect".
However, according to the Wiki article, the intoxicating effect of absinthe has nothing to do with Thujone levels.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Thujone

So the absinthe companies that boast high thujone levels are not only furthering the misconceptions, but they're also unnecessarily putting their clientele at risk by exposing them to higher than normal levels of this harmful chemical. Or they're lying (false advertising) to outsell the competition.

I'm also interested in learning more about the 2005 thujone level study in which they discovered that many of the "better" varieties of vintage absinthes actually contained very little Thujone. So little that they would be legal in the US.
I want to read up on that a bit more.

Grande Absente

I happened to find this on the shelf at a local BevMo while I was looking for Tourment Verte and Kubler.

I bought the botle that was still in the box, and it came with an absinthe spoon (this one is golden colored, and of a differnt style than I already have in my collection).

Once home, I filled my icewater fountain and pulled the bottle out of the box.

The bottle is clear, and the absinthe inside shows as a pale lime green.

I poured a glass and the smell is more powerful than Absente.

I used the new spoon to hold a C&H sugar cube and opened the faucet on the icewater fountain. While I was waiting for the sugar cube to melt, the spoon slipped and the cube went ker-plunk in to the glass. The new spoon does not have the slight notch in it to ride the brim of the goblet, and I think this is a mistake.

I continued to dilute without the spoon, and the louche was lovely. I went to stir up the undisolved sugars in the bottom of the goblet and had to use the handle of the spoon - this is just wrong, a spoon should let you stir hygienically.

The taste is an order of magnitude above Absente. It is bold and powerful. Some folks may want to dilute this drink a bit more than 5:1, in order to make it easier on the tongue.

I think it is a winner.

Alameda, CA distillery to produce absinthe

w00t!!!!! I can ride over and visit!

http://www.sfgate.com/cgi-bin/article.cgi?f=/c/a/2007/12/05/MNQJTO9FM.DTL&tsp=1
(larger story at the link)

...
Last week, St. George Spirits of Alameda received the news that, after seven applications, the federal agency had approved its label, the final obstacle before going to market. On Monday, the small artisan distillery sold its token first bottle, becoming the only American company since 1912 to sell absinthe in the United States. Then the staff took a moment to celebrate.

"We made champagne and absinthe cocktails, which rapidly degenerated into just sipping absinthe out of the bottle with crazy straws," said Lance Winters, a 42-year-old master distiller at the seven-employee company.

For 11 years Winters experimented, adding a little of this and little of that. No matter how close he came to perfection, each new batch had to be dumped down the drain to comply with federal dictate. But come Dec. 21, St. George will begin selling 3,600 bottles of its Absinthe Verte. That's too few to distribute to big chains, so for now the company will offer it at its Alameda tasting room and at limited liquor stores for $75 for a 750 ml bottle.
...

Review of Absinto Camargo

Absinto Camargo

I placed an order through BevMax on Feb. 5, 2008. Two bottles at $24.99 each and $22.58 for shipping made the bill be $72.56.

It arrived today, Feb. 18, 2008, apparently the majority of the delay was due to freezing weather conditions in the northeast. The FedEx route went from Stamford, CT through Elmsford, NY, Keasbey, NJ, North Salt Lake City, UT, Reno, NV and Benicia, CA, before arriving at my house in Lafayette. Interesting to note that the “Adult Signature Required” restriction was not adhered to – the delivery driver set it on the front step and rang the doorbell, then left.

The product arrived intact in a good shipping container.

The Label has some interesting artwork, although the green fairy that is depicted seems to have an Asian look about her. The label states that it is a product of Brazil and that it is 54% alcohol by volume. The back label includes directions and illustrations on how to prepare Absinto, which is a nice touch if you haven’t got a clue about appropriate preparation. It also includes a suggested cocktail recipe.

The cork is interesting, I don’t think I’ve ever seen one quite like it before. It has a notched wooden cap filled with a composite cork. The cap is tied to the bottle in an effort to keep it from coming loose when it is subjected to tropical heat. The cord that ties the cap on is knotted and the loose ends of the knotted cord are taped down with the bottle’s upper neck-label. It is suggested that you pull the ends of the cord up through the label and then untie the cord in order to free the cork. That’s what I did, and untying the cord is a waste of time; next time, I’m merely going to cut the cord.

The smell of the newly-opened bottle was pleasant.

The color, however, leaves something to be desired. It is almost a pale lime color, when it should be more of a dark emerald color. Once poured into the glass, it appeared almost as if the color was an artificial green, and not the result of natural chlorophylls that had been macerated out of an appropriate herb.

I prepared my first glass by diluting with ice water and two sugar cubes. I was disappointed because the drink did not louche at all.

The taste is mild, and not what I’ve come to expect of an absinthe. In addition, there was no numbing of the tongue and cheeks that one gets with some of the other products.

I will try it again in a less diluted state. Now that I’ve paid more attention to the back label, I see that I’ve diluted it according to my normal preference (1:4) and the suggested dilution is 1:2.

Final Assessment: PASS. I will pour this when I am giving people taste tests and want to provide additional variety, but I prefer the Kubler and the St. George. Even the Lucid is better than this.

Has anyone ever tried to make the home "absinthe" kits? And if so how do they compare to the historic effects of legend? I understand that taste is an issue I'm not looking for a quality debate. Just a base line on functionality. Thanks to all who are willing to impart knowledge.

For the past five years we have been throwing underground absinthe parties. Now we are going legit.
Our first legal absinthe party will be held at Whisper in SF on Friday, December 28th. I want you to be there.

All the info is at:
www.absintheparty.com

Doors are at 9.

We are firming up details. I'll get all the info to you in a couple of days. Right now I can tell you that we have one of my favorite DJs in the world, Tipsy. We also have one of my favorite magicians in the world, Jimmy Talks a Lot. We are currently working on a lot more for you.

If you get your tickets before Xmass they are just $10.

Dress up and we will see you there.

Paul

PS. I've been in touch with the lawyer who made it happen. All the info about the legalization of absinthe in the US is available on our FAQ page at www.absintheparty.com

I just walked up to a little store called Ellington and French, just underneath the Claremont Hotel. In the window, they have a display of some gorgeous absinthe fountains, along with glasses, spoons, and a sugar container in the traditional style. I talked to the clerk who put the window together and she said that the window will be taken down this weekend, but they currently have 5 fountains left, one of the sugar containers, and lots of spoons and glasses. The glasses were very reasonably priced at $10/each. The spoons were $19, I think. The fountains ranged from $250-300. Didn't see the price on the sugar container.

She also reported that the restaurant Absinthe, in Hayes Valley of SF, is now carrying absinthe (including a load of Czech varieties. Someone needs to talk to their buyer...).

Hey all,
Just got an e-mail from this liquor store in NYC that is getting a shipment of Kübler 53 Swiss Absinthe and I'm wondering what people's thoughts are on the flavor and the overall quality. I think I remember hearing that it's good but... not sure.

Thinking about ordering a bottle or 2.

Thanks!

what makes serpis red? I was hesitant to try it, but it tasted quite lovely.

I recently received 4 bottles from spiritscorner: pernod, oxygenee, serpis 65%, and NS 55%.

I thought Pernod and Oxygenee were really high in anise flavor, compared to the Spanish ones, which seemed more balanced.

Would anyone know a good source for absinthe-specific spoons (which will allow the flaming sugar muixture to drip directly into the glass?) Sebor offered one at one time, but I remember it to be a little pricey. Thoughts?

Ok, so for those of you who *insist* that you can just steep herbs in vodka and make absinthe, here's what you should really be doing:

Lucid review ~ Mmmmm...

Short story:

It's very smooth, clean and tastes very pure. I feel like the high-quality of the ingredients is very noticeable when sipping it.

- 2 thumbs up!
- 5 stars!
- 10 out of 10!

Longer story:

I got my box from LeNells wine & spirits (in NYC) yesterday... it was 3 days early and I did a couple o' backflips before opening it.
I lucked out and found a place that still had a few dozen bottles left of Lucid's 1st batch of Absinthe ever - the 1st absinthe intended for the USA now that it's been deprohibited.

Even though I didn't know how good it would be, I bought 2 bottles. Partially because I read some reviews and everybody seemed to love it and also because I want to save the 2nd one as a keepsake. Hah... let's see if I'll actually be able to do that!!

So I got out the potato peeler straight away [i don't have an absinthe spoon] popped a sugar cube in that thing and made myself a little drink. It was really smooth and refreshing. From now on though, I'm gonna do without the sugar. It really doesn't need it. It is a very pure and clean tasting absinthe with a natural sweetness from the anise. Even 1 sugar cube made it seem a bit overly sweet... and I'm a 3 sugars in my coffee guy.
I was told it wasn't a sweet absinthe - that it's more of a dry one... but I wouldn't really want it any sweeter.

Perhaps, since they toned down the anise flavor, (to appeal to American palettes) that could be where they lost some of the sweetness?

All I know is that it's really good and there are still a few bottles left at LeNells - (800) NO SNOBS.

And since it's considered a low/no-thujone absinthe, I will mention that the effects were as good, if not better than any other absinthe I've tried. I only had one shot/one drink (wanted to wait until my wife can partake with me before I really go for it) and I was buzzing & fuzzing for a good couple of hours. So that's one more nail in the thujone coffin for me.

Apparently, Absinthe is off the U.S. blacklist:

"...but now a Manhasset distributor Lucid has convinced the U.S. Alcohol-Tobacco Tax and Trade Bureau that the green fairy is just as safe as any other liver-pickling, brain-shrinking alcohol on the market."

http://nymag.com/daily/food/2007/05/absinthe_feels_so_good_when_it.html

A connoisseur friend of mine had a bit of interesting commentary on the subject:

"This is great and unexpected news...

And I'm especially glad to see that this is under the auspices of Ted Breaux, who's been making the best stuff around in Europe for several years now.

I just wish they'd left him in charge of packaging too... the retro oriented labels of the jade absinthes we've had were gorgeous. This new US bottle design would have been better labeled 'Lurid' than 'Lucid.'"

Hi, I am very very new to Absinthe (have not tried it yet), but my bf and I are both facinated. As a result, I have ordered a bottle of Czech absinthe and am awaiting its arrival. In the meanwhile, I am curious about opinions on this particular absinthe from those who have tried and and/or others. Thanks.

Staroplzenecky Absinth

I've already ordered it, as I said. But, if anyone has suggestions, opinions, etc. to offer as far as future orders (assuming we like absinthe), all advice will be appreciated.

Thanks.

New Absinthe Boutique open for Christmas orders!

Very short advertisement: for those of you who like great Swiss absinthe, please try the English language version of our new boutique:

www.absinthe-suisse.com/en/accueil/index.php

Unlike most absinthe shops, we are intimately involved in the distillation process; Claude-Alain Bugnon has chosen all the absinthes we sell. We don't sell Czech absinth, because we don't believe in it. If you share our passion and our belief in what makes a great absinthe, we'd love to welcome you to our small boutique.

Santé!

DIY fountain experience?

Having just gotten a fountain from eAbsinthe, I realized that one is not enough, esp. for a party setting.

For the cost of importing one, I imagine a person could make two or tree (functional, not as attractive) fountains by modifying something and using good clean materials... plus, there should be more attention to insulation, I think, to make sure the water comes out as cold as possible. Old style construction is fun, but I prefer to throw some modern engineering at old ideas as well.

I made one by modifying a hurricane lamp from Cost Plus, sealing the parts togther (w/ptfe tape (_not_ exposed to reservoir) and a hand-cut gasket), 1/4" copper, brass compression fittings, etc. Here's the lamp I modded-- too short to fit a glass, it turns out (I grabbed it on a whim, not thinking about measuring at the time), but the threads are standard so it shouldn't be hard to make it taller:
http://tinyurl.com/yhb98q
It's nice that it's actually plated brass-- easy to sweat it to copper. Works fine for one person, as long as I prop it on something-- I only have one spigot working.

Has anybody made their own fountain? my goal is a 6-spigot fountain with a 2 gallon reservoir....:o

btw this one is brilliant (and big!), not exactly "home"-made; I just like it:

How well does Absinthe keep?

So I've noticed that some absinthes come in bottles with screw tops (Pernod, Francoise Guy) while others come in corked bottles (Nouvelle Orleans). Does the screw top variety keep better than the corked? I'd be a bit worried about holding onto an opened bottle of Nouvelle Orleans and have it go bad since it costs $100 a bottle.

thanks.

Le Fee in Nova Scotia

After ignoring warnings and drinking Hills brought down from Vancover and some Incredible "Green-tree" or something absinth from TJ (incredible in it's uses as an anti-tank weapon if used as a Molitov Cocktail. Soul-crushingly vile if you are talking about actually consuming the stuff....) I was begining to despair on getting a somewhat decent bottle in North America for under $100. However, I hear that Le fee has started being offered in the State Liquor Stores in Nova Scotia.

While not the creme of the crop, I actually enjoyed the bottles we sampled here in SF, and would be pleased as punch if the versions they offer in Nova Scotia are the same as the type they send out of England...

Can anyone in that neck of the Mapleleaf Confederacy confirm this, or do they have to offer a special 78% really-fucking-Sucks content version that seems to define North American absinthe supplies...

I can afford a trip north next time I'm on the east coast. IF not, I need to figure out how much time I need to spend on the streets as a rent boy to afford the courier fee on that bottle of Pernod 68...
Keep always this dim corner for me, that I may sit while the
Green Hour glides, a proud pavine of Time. For I am no longer in
the city accursed, where Time is horsed on the white gelding

There is a corner of the United States which he has overlooked.
It lies in New Orleans, between Canal Street and Esplanade
At least the poet of Le Legende des Sexes was right, and the
Tomb. This, then, is only the beginning and end of things, this
"quartier macabre" beyond the North Rampart with the Mississippi
on the other side. It is like the space between, our life which
flows, and fertilizes as it flows, muddy and malarious as it may
be, to empty itself into the warm bosom of the Gulf Stream, which
(in our allegory) we may call the Life of God.

But our business is with the heart of things; we must go beyond
the crude phenomena of nature if we are to dwell in the spirit.
Art is the soul of life and the Old Absinthe House is heart and
soul of the old quarter of New Orleans.

For here was the headquarters of no common man--no less than a
real pirate--of Captain Lafitte, who not only robbed his
neighbors, but defended them against invasion. Here, too, sat
Henry Clay, who lived and died to give his name to a cigar.
Outside this house no man remembers much more of him than that;
but here, authentic and, as I imagine, indignant, his ghost
stalks grimly.

Here, too are marble basins hollowed--and hallowed!--by the
drippings of the water which creates by baptism the new spirit of
absinthe.

I am only sipping the second glass of that "fascinating, but
subtle poison, whose ravages eat men's heart and brain" that I
have ever tasted in my life; and as I am not an American anxious
for quick action, I am not surprised and disappointed that I do
not drop dead upon the spot. But I can taste souls without the
aid of absinthe; and besides, this is magic of absinthe! The
spirit of the house has entered into it; it is an elixir, the
masterpiece of an old alchemist, no common wine.

And so, as I talk with the patron concerning the vanity of
things, I perceive the secret of the heart of God himself; this,
that everything, even the vilest thing, is so unutterably lovely
that it is worthy of the devotion of a God for all eternity.

What other excuse could He give man for making him? In substance,
that is my answer to King Solomon.

II.

The barrier between divine and human things is frail but
inviolable; the artist and the bourgeois are only divided by a
point of view--"A hair divided the false and true."

I am watching the opalescence of my absinthe, and it leads me to
ponder upon a certain very curious mystery, persistent in legend.
We may call it the mystery of the rainbow.

Originally in the fantastic but significant legend of the
Hebrews, the rainbow is mentioned as the sign of salvation. The
world has been purified by water, and was ready for the
revelation of Wine. God would never again destroy His work, but
ultimately seal its perfection by a baptism of fire.

Now, in this analogue also falls the coat of many colors which
was made for Joseph, a legend which was regarded as so important
that it was subsequently borrowed for the romance of Jesus. The
veil of the Temple, too, was of many colors. We find, further
east, that the Manipura Cakkra--the Lotus of the City of
Jewels--which is an important centre in Hindu anatomy, and
apparently identical with the solar plexus, is the central point
of the nervous system of the human body, dividing the sacred from
the profane, or the lower from the higher.

In western Mysticism, once more we learn that the middle grade
initiation is called Hodos Camelioniis, the Path of the
Chameleon. There is here evidently an illusion to this same
mystery. We also learn that the middle stage in Alchemy is when
the liquor becomes opalescent.

Finally, we note among the visions of the Saints one called the
Universal Peacock, in which the totality is perceived thus
royally appareled.

Would it were possible to assemble in this place the cohorts of
quotation; for indeed they are beautiful with banners, flashing
their myriad rays from cothurn and habergeon, gay and gallant in
the light of that Sun which knows no fall from Zenith of high
noon!

Yet I must needs already have written so much to make clear one
pitiful conceit: can it be that in the opalescence of absinthe is
some occult link with this mystery of the Rainbow? For
undoubtedly one does indefinably and subtly insinuate the drinker
in the secret chamber of Beauty, does kindle his thoughts to
rapture, adjust his point of view to that of the artists, at
least to that degree of which he is originally capable, weave for
his fancy a gala dress of stuff as many-colored as the mind of
Aphrodite.

Oh Beauty! Long did I love thee, long did I pursue thee, thee
elusive, thee intangible! And lo! thou enfoldest me by night and
day in the arms of gracious, of luxurious, of shimmering silence.

III.

The Prohibitionist must always be a person of no moral character;
for he cannot even conceive of the possibility of a man capable
of resisting temptation. Still more, he is so obsessed, like the
savage, by the fear of the unknown, that he regards alcohol as a
fetish, necessarily alluring and tyrannical.

With this ignorance of human nature goes an ever grosser
ignorance of the divine nature. He does not understand that the
universe has only one possible purpose; that, the business of
life being happily completed by the production of the necessities
and luxuries incidental to comfort, the residuum of human energy
needs an outlet. The surplus of Will must find issue in the
elevation of the individual towards the Godhead; and the method
of such elevation is by religion, love, and art. These three
things are indissolubly bound up with wine, for they are species
of intoxication.

Yet against all these things we find the prohibitionist,
logically enough. It is true that he usually pretends to admit
religion as a proper pursuit for humanity; but what a religion!
He has removed from it every element of ecstasy or even of
devotion; in his hands it has become cold, fanatical, cruel, and
stupid, a thing merciless and formal, without sympathy or
humanity. Love and art he rejects altogether; for him the only
meaning of love is a mechanical--hardly even
physiological!--process necessary for the perpetuation of the
human race. (But why perpetuate it?) Art is for him the parasite
and pimp of love. He cannot distinguish between the Apollo
Belvedere and the crude bestialities of certain Pompeian
frescoes, or between Rabelais and Elenor Glyn.

What then is his ideal of human life? one cannot say. So crass a
creature can have no true ideal. There have been ascetic
philosophers; but the prohibitionist would be as offended by
their doctrine as by ours, which, indeed, are not so dissimilar
as appears. Wage-slavery and boredom seem to complete his outlook
on the world.

There are species which survive because of the feeling of disgust
inspired by them: one is reluctant to set the heel firmly upon
them, however thick may be one's boots. But when they are
recognized as utterly noxious to humanity--the more so that they
ape its form--then courage must be found, or, rather, nausea must
be swallowed. May God send us a Saint George!

IV.

It is notorious that all genius is accompanied by vice. Almost
always this takes the form of sexual extravagance. It is to be
observed that deficiency, as in the cases of Carlyle and Ruskin,
is to be reckoned as extravagance. At least the word abnormalcy
will fit all cases. Farther, we see that in a very large number
of great men there has also been indulgence in drink or drugs.
There are whole periods when practically every great man has been
thus marked, and these periods are those during which the heroic
spirit has died out of their nation, and the burgeois is
apparently triumphant.

In this case the cause is evidently the horror of life induced in
the artist by the contemplation of his surroundings. He must find
another world, no matter at what cost.

Consider the end of the eighteenth century. In France the men of
genius are made, so to speak, possible, by the Revolution. In
England, under Castlereagh, we find Blake lost to humanity in
mysticism, Shelley and Byron exiles, Coleridge taking refuge in
opium, Keats sinking under the weight of circumstance, Wordsworth
forced to sell his soul, while the enemy, in the persons of
Southey and Moore, triumphantly holds sway.

The poetically similar period in France is 1850 to 1870. Hugo is
in exile, and all his brethren are given to absinthe or to
hashish or to opium.

There is however another consideration more important. There are
some men who possess the understanding of the City of God, and
know not the keys; or, if they possess them, have not force to
turn them in the wards. Such men often seek to win heaven by
forged credentials. Just so a youth who desires love is too often
deceived by simulacra, embraces Lydia thinking her to be Lalage.

But the greatest men of all suffer neither the limitations of the
former class nor the illusions of the latter. Yet we find them
equally given to what is apparently indulgence. Lombroso has
foolishly sought to find the source of this in madness--as if
insanity could scale the peaks of Progress while Reason recoiled
from the bergschrund. The explanation is far otherwise. Imagine
to yourself the mental state of him who inherits or attains the
full consciousness of the artist, that is to say, the divine
consciousness.

He finds himself unutterably lonely, and he must steel himself to
endure it. All his peers are dead long since! Even if he find an
equal upon earth, there can scarcely be companionship, hardly
more than the far courtesy of king to king. There are no twin
souls in genius.

Good--he can reconcile himself to the scorn of the world. But yet
he feels with anguish his duty towards it. It is therefore
essential to him to be human.

Now the divine consciousness is not full flowered in youth. The
newness of the objective world preoccupies the soul for many
years. It is only as each illusion vanishes before the magic of
the master that he gains more and more the power to dwell in the
world of Reality. And with this comes the terrible
temptation--the desire to enter and enjoy rather than remain
among men and suffer their illusions. Yet, since the sole purpose
of the incarnation of such a Master was to help humanity, they
must make the supreme renunciation. It is the problem of the
dreadful bridge of Islam, Al Sirak--the razor-edge will cut the
unwary foot, yet it must be trodden firmly, or the traveler will
fall to the abyss. I dare not sit in the Old Absinthe House
forever, wrapped in the ineffable delight of the Beatific Vision.
I must write this essay, that men may thereby come at last to
understand true things. But the operation of the creative godhead
is not enough. Art is itself too near the reality which must be
renounced for a season.

Therefore his work is also part of his temptation; the genius
feels himself slipping constantly heavenward. The gravitation of
eternity draws him. He is like a ship torn by the tempest from
the harbor where the master must needs take on new passengers to
the Happy Isles. So he must throw out anchors and the only
holding is the mire! Thus in order to maintain the equilibrium of
sanity, the artist is obliged to seek fellowship with the
grossest of mankind. Like Lord Dunsany or Augustus John, today,
or like Teniers or old, he may love to sit in taverns where
sailors frequent; or he may wander the country with Gypsies, or
he may form liaisons with the vilest men and women. Edward
Fitzgerald would see an illiterate fisherman and spend weeks in
his company. Verlaine made associates of Rimbaud and Bibi la
Puree. Shakespeare consorted with the Earls of Pembroke and
Southampton. Marlowe was actually killed during a brawl in a low
tavern. And when we consider the sex-relation, it is hard to
mention a genius who had a wife or mistress of even tolerable
good character. If he had one, he would be sure to neglect her
for a Vampire or a Shrew. A good woman is too near that heaven of
Reality which he is sworn to renounce!

And this, I suppose, is why I am interested in the woman who has
come to sit at the nearest table. Let us find out her story; let
us try to see with the eyes of her soul!

V.

She is a woman of no more than thirty years of age, though she
looks older. She comes here at irregular intervals, once a week
or once a month, but when she comes she sits down to get solidly
drunk on that alternation of beer and gin which the best
authorities in England deem so efficacious.

As to her story, it is simplicity itself. She was kept in luxury
for some years by a wealthy cotton broker, crossed to Europe with
him, and lived in London and Paris like a Queen. Then she got the
idea of "respectability" and "settling down in life"; so she
married a man who could keep her in mere comfort. Result:
repentance, and a periodical need to forget her sorrows. She is
still "respectable"; she never tires of repeating that she is not
one of "those girls" but "a married woman living far uptown," and
that she "never runs about with men."

It is not the failure of marriage; it is the failure of men to
recognize what marriage was ordained to be. By a singular paradox
it is the triumph of the bourgeois. Only the hero is capable of
marriage as the church understands it; for the marriage oath is a
compact of appalling solemnity, an alliance of two souls against
the world and against fate, with invocation of the great blessing
of the Most High. Death is not the most beautiful of adventures,
as Frohman said, for death is unavoidable; marriage is a
voluntary heroism. That marriage has today become a matter of
convenience is the last word of the commercial spirit. It is as
if one should take a vow of knighthood to combat dragons--until
the dragons appeared.

So this poor woman, because she did not understand that
respectability is a lie, that it is love that makes marriage
sacred and not the sanction of church or state, because she took
marriage as an asylum instead of as a crusade, has failed in
life, and now seeks alcohol under the same fatal error.

Wine is the ripe gladness which accompanies valor and rewards
toil; it is the plume on a man's lancehead, a fluttering
gallantry--not good to lean upon. Therefore her eyes are glassed
with horror as she gazes uncomprehending upon her fate. That
which she did all to avoid confronts her: she does not realize
that, had she faced it, it would have fled with all the other
phantoms. For the sole reality of this universe is God.

The Old Absinthe House is not a place. It is not bounded by four
walls. It is headquarters to an army of philosophies. From this
dim corner let me range, wafting thought through every air,
salient against every problem of mankind: for it will always
return like Noah's dove to this ark, this strange little
sanctuary of the Green Goddess which has been set down not upon
Ararat, but by the banks of the "Father of Waters."

VI.

Ah! the Green Goddess! What is the fascination that makes her so
adorable and so terrible? Do you know that French sonnet "La
legende de l'absinthe?" He must have loved it well, that poet.
Here are his witnesses.

--Ensorcelle mon coeur, extasie mort ame!

What is there in absinthe that makes it a separate cult? The
effects of its abuse are totally distinct from those of other
stimulants. Even in ruin and in degradation it remains a thing
apart: its victims wear a ghastly aureole all their own, and in
their peculiar hell yet gloat with a sinister perversion of pride
that they are not as other men.

But we are not to reckon up the uses of a thing by contemplating
the wreckage of its abuse. We do not curse the sea because of
occasional disasters to our marines, or refuse axes to our
woodsmen because we sympathize with Charles the First or Louis
the Sixteenth. So therefore as special vices and dangers
pertinent to absinthe, so also do graces and virtues that adorn
no other liquor.

The word is from the Greek apsinthion. It means "undrinkable" or,
according to some authorities, "undelightful." In either case,
strange paradox! No: for the wormwood draught itself were bitter
beyond human endurance; it must be aromatized and mellowed with
other herbs.

Chief among these is the gracious Melissa, of which the great
Paracelsus thought so highly that he incorporated it as the
preparation of his Ens Melissa Vitae, which he expected to be an
elixir of life and a cure for all diseases, but which in his
hands never came to perfection.

Then also there are added mint, anise, fennel and hyssop, all
holy herbs familiar to all from the Treasury of Hebrew Scripture.
And there is even the sacred marjoram which renders man both
chaste and passionate; the tender green angelica stalks also
infused in this most mystic of concoctions; for like the
artemisia absinthium itself it is a plant of Diana, and gives the
purity and lucidity, with a touch of the madness, of the Moon;
and above all there is the Dittany of Crete of which the eastern
Sages say that one flower hath more puissance in high magic than
all the other gifts of all the gardens of the world. It is as if
the first diviner of absinthe had been indeed a magician intent
upon a combination of sacred drugs which should cleanse, fortify
and perfume the human soul.

And it is no doubt that in the due employment of this liquor such
effects are easy to obtain. A single glass seems to render the
breathing freer, the spirit lighter, the heart more ardent, soul
and mind alike more capable of executing the great task of doing
that particular work in the world which the Father may have sent
them to perform. Food itself loses its gross qualities in the
presence of absinthe and becomes even as manna, operating the
sacrament of nutrition without bodily disturbance.

Let then the pilgrim enter reverently the shrine, and drink his
absinthe as a stirrup-cup; for in the right conception of this
life as an ordeal of chivalry lies the foundation of every
perfection of philosophy. "Whatsoever ye do, whether ye eat or
drink, do all to the glory of God!" applies with singular force
to the absintheur. So may he come victorious from the battle of
life to be received with tender kisses by some green-robed
archangel, and crowned with mystic vervain in the Emerald Gateway
of the Golden City of God.

VII.

And now the cafe is beginning to fill up. This little room with
its dark green woodwork, its boarded ceiling, its sanded floor,
its old pictures, its whole air of sympathy with time, is
beginning to exert its magic spell. Here comes a curious child,
short and sturdy, with a long blonde pigtail, with a jolly little
old man who looks as if he had stepped straight out of the pages
of Balzac.

Handsome and diminutive, with a fierce mustache almost as big as
the rest of him, like a regular little Spanish fighting
cock--Frank, the waiter, in his long white apron, struts to them
with the glasses of ice-cold pleasure, green as the glaciers
themselves. He will stand up bravely with the musicians bye and
bye, and sing us a jolly song of old Catalonia.

The door swings open again. A tall dark girl, exquisitely slim
and snaky, with masses of black hair knotted about her head,
comes in. On her arm is a plump woman with hungry eyes, and a
mass of Titian red hair. They seem distracted from the outer
world, absorbed in some subject of enthralling interest and they
drink their aperitif as if in a dream. I ask the mulatto boy who
waits at my table (the sleek and lithe black panther!) who they
are; but he knows only that one is a cabaret dancer, the other
the owner of a cotton plantation up river. At a round table in
the middle of the room sits one of the proprietors with a group
of friends; he is burly, rubicund, and jolly, the very type of
the Shakespearean "Mine host." Now a party of a dozen merry boys
and girls comes in. The old pianist begins to play a dance, and
in a moment the whole cafe is caught up in the music of
harmonious motion. Yet still the invisible line is drawn about
each soul; the dance does not conflict with the absorption of the
two strange women, or with my own mood of detachment.

Then there is a "little laughing lewd gamine" dressed all in
black save for a square white collar. Her smile is broad and free
as the sun and her gaze as clean and wholesome and inspiring.
There is the big jolly blonde Irish girl in the black velvet
beret and coat, and the white boots, chatting with two boys in
khaki from the border. There is the Creole girl in pure white
cap-a-pie, with her small piquant face and its round button of a
nose, and its curious deep rose flush, and its red little mouth,
impudently smiling. Around these islands seems to flow as a
general tide the more stable life of the quarter. Here are honest
good-wives seriously discussing their affairs, and heaven only
knows if it be love or the price of sugar which engages them so
wholly. There are but a few commonplace and uninteresting
elements in the cafe; and these are without exception men. The
giant Big Business is a great tyrant! He seizes all the men for
slaves, and leaves the women to make shift as best they can
for--all that makes life worth living. Candies and American
Beauty Roses are of no use in an emergency. So, even in this most
favored corner, there is dearth of the kind of men that women
need.

At the table next to me sits an old, old man. He has done great
things in his day, they tell me, an engineer, who first found it
possible to dig Artesian wells in the Sahara desert. The Legion
of Honor glows red in his shabby surtout. He comes here, one of
the many wrecks of the Panama Canal, a piece of jetsam cast up by
that tidal wave of speculation and corruption. He is of the old
type, the thrifty peasantry; and he has his little income from
the Rente. He says that he is too old to cross the ocean--and why
should he, with the atmosphere of old France to be had a stone's
throw from his little apartment in Bourbon Street? It is a
curious type of house that one finds in this quarter in New
Orleans; meagre without, but within one comes unexpectedly upon
great spaces, carved wooden balconies on which the rooms open. So
he dreams away his honored days in the Old Absinthe House. His
rusty black, with its worn red button, is a noble wear.

Black, by the way, seems almost universal among the women: is it
instinctive good taste? At least, it serves to bring up the
general level of good looks. Most American women spoil what
little beauty they may have by overdressing. Here there is
nothing extravagant, nothing vulgar, none of the near-Paris-gown
and the lust-off-Bond-Street hat. Nor is there a single dress to
which a Quaker could object. There is neither the mediocrity nor
the immodesty of the New York woman, who is tailored or
millinered on a garish pattern, with the Eternal Chorus Girl as
the Ideal--an ideal which she always attains, though (Heaven
knows!) in "society" there are few "front row" types.

On the other side of me a splendid stalwart maid, modern in
muscle, old only in the subtle and modest fascination of her
manner, her face proud, cruel and amorous, shakes her wild
tresses of gold in pagan laughter. Her mood is universal as the
wind. What can her cavalier be doing to keep her waiting? It is a
little mystery which I will not solve for the reader; on the
contrary--

VIII.

Yes, it was my own sweetheart (no! not all the magazines can
vulgarize that loveliest of words) who was waiting for me to be
done with my musings. She comes in silently and stealthily,
preening and purring like a great cat, and sits down, and begins
to Enjoy. She know I must never be disturbed until I close my
pen. We shall go together to dine at a little Italian restaurant
kept by an old navy man, who makes the best ravioli this side of
Genoa; then we shall walk the wet and windy streets, rejoicing to
feel the warm sub-tropical rain upon our faces. We shall go down
to the Mississippi, and watch the lights of the ships, and listen
to the tales of travel and adventure of the mariners. There is
one tale that moves me greatly; it is like the story of the
sentinel of Herculaneum. A cruiser of the U.S. Navy was detailed
to Rio de Janeiro. (This was before the days of wireless
telegraphy.) The port was in quarantine; the ship had to stand
ten miles out to sea. Nevertheless, Yellow Jack managed to come
aboard. The men died one by one. There was no way of getting word
to Washington; and, as it turned out later, the Navy Department
had completely forgotten the existence of the ship. No orders
came; the captain stuck to his post for three months. Three
months of solitude and death! At last a passing ship was
signaled, and the cruiser was moved to happier waters. No doubt
the story is a lie; but did that make it less splendid in the
telling, as the old scoundrel sat and spat and chewed tobacco?
No, we will certainly go down, and ruffle it on the wharves.
There is really better fun in life than going to the movies, when
you know how to sense Reality.

There is beauty in every incident of life; the true and the
false, the wise and the foolish, are all one in the eye that
beholds all without passion or prejudice: and the secret appears
to lie not in the retirement from the world, but in keeping a
part of oneself Vestal, sacred, intact, aloof from that self
which makes contact with the external universe. In other words,
in a separation of that which is and perceives from that which
acts and suffers. And the art of doing this is really the art of
being an artist. As a rule, it is a birthright; it may perhaps be
attained by prayer and fasting; most surely, it can never be
bought.

But if you have it not. This will be the best way to get it--or
something like it. Give up your life completely to the task; sit
daily for six hours in the Old Absinthe House, and sip the icy
opal; endure till all things change insensibly before your eyes,
you changing with them; till you become as gods, knowing good and
evil, and that they are not two but one.

It may be a long time before the veil lifts; but a moment's
experience of the point of view of the artist is worth a myriad
martyrdoms. It solves every problem of life and death--which two
also are one.

It translates this universe into intelligible terms, relating
truly the ego with the non-ego, and recasting the prose of reason
in the poetry of soul. Even as the eye of the sculptor beholds
his masterpiece already existing in the shapeless mass of marble,
needing only the loving kindness of the chisel to cut away the
veils of Isis, so you may (perhaps) learn to behold the sum and
summit of all grace and glory from this great observatory, the
Old Absinthe House of New Orleans.

V'la, p'tite chatte; c'est fini, le travail. Foutons le camp!

I think all abinsinthe orders from Europe won't be happening anytime soon. Anyone got any word on this? They're fedinatelt not allowing any liquids forms at all. I'd like to order some for Burning Man, but I'm not sure about all the flight restrictions now.

I have not tried to make my own Absinthe, yet. Although I did make some Dandelion wine with a freind of mine a few summers ago..which was quite nice.

However, if anyone is interested in making their own absinthe, check this link out...

Newbie Question

Howdy everyone!

I had my first glass earlier this evening, and while the taste and experience were pleasureable, I was surprised with the color. It was my underatanding that the additiion of cold water and sugar to the spirit would cause the drink to turn from a clear emerald green to a cloudy mint green. As you would expect, the drink did turn pale with the addition of water, but there was no clouding. I could really care less about the color of my drinks, but if the lack of cloudiness is indicative of some other factor which might lead to a substandard experience ... I DO care about that.

Thanks for your expertiese.

I placed an order with Alandia, I’ve ordered with them many times in the past and never encountered any problems what so ever.

I’ve always received my order with in 6 days, not bad since it’s coming from Germany. Well after 3 weeks, and no green faery, I dropped them a line. They told me that customs grabbed every order they shipped over the last few weeks, they also said that there competitors were having the same problems as well. They would not take a chance on reshipping, but did give me a full refund. In the e-mail they recommended holding of on purchasing anything from them till they can guarantee the shipping, or Uncle Sam cools off.

Caveat Emptor…

I sat out the riots in Kabul drinking this absinthe a buddy brought me from Prague. Any thoughts on the quality of it? I wondered where it fits in on the absinthe food chain.

A new Tribe - Psychedelic Trip Reports

A tribe to report Psychedelic Trips. http://tribes.tribe.net/psychedelic_trip_reports

Formats from www.erowid.org and http://forums.lycaeum.org/ will be followed:

The purpose of these reports is to help others deal, understand and share their journeys. The primary function of this tribe is the exchange of drug experiences in such a way as to help others that find themselves in similar situations. In addition to trip reports, experiences with other forms of mind-altering activities such as yoga, meditation, and substance preparations are also accepted.

Specifically looking for well-written reports that describe more than just a list of activities that you engaged in. Please include description of mindset, physical and mental effects of a substance, intentions, insights, problems, and any other relevant information which you think might help others in their journey.

Subject line of reports to contain at least the name of the substance(s) used. New threads must only be started with a report. For people to get the most out this tribe please included as many of the details listed below as possible:

- Level of experience (first time, very experienced, etc.)
- Description of Mindset (state of mind/body before, during and after)
- Setting – where you were, who you were with, etc.
- Chemical(s) and Dosage
- Method of administration (oral, smoked, intramuscular, etc)
- Details of any preparations made for the experience
- Timing Information (when, how long, etc.)
- Effects both spiritual and/or physical
- Notes on prescription or over-the-counter medications, herbs or supplements you were taking at the time of the experience.
- Intention - tell people why you have tripped (social reasons, problem solving, gaining a spiritual insight into self or universe, etc.)
- Afterthought – did the experience changed you, confirm your belief, remind you of something, etc.
- Something more than a description of how messed up you were or what cool patterns you saw.

VERY IMPORTANT:
- New threads must only be started with a report.
- This is an open forum so please do NOT include any other personal information then your height, weight, and physical condition.
- NO discussion about trading, selling, or obtaining any substance (legal or not) will be discussed on this tribe

Enjoy the Journey

Small Pains in temple and behind his eyes
Little hurts due to over doing it through out the night
Mouth tastes wrong from too much drink
Which explains the headache
Yet when he licks his lips he tastes Strawberry
Opening his eyes he sees not the Dusty and faded ceiling he is accustomed to
But a canopy of gauze and lace
He attempts to sit up yet finds his arm pined by a soft yet heavy weight
Turning his head painfully towards a soft sound to his right
He sees her and the past 10 hours come flooding back to him
The Party
The woman in the Red Corset
Absinth, and Sweet strawberry lips
Her eyes open and he watches her face
As her mind takes in the moment
Through the memory of last eves revels
Then she looks at him and smiles
Again he tastes the sweetness of her lips

If we where to have another party (and I'm not saying that we are) what would be the brands that you would most want to try? My favorites are Philipe Lasalle, Pernod, Tabu Strong, Verte de Fogerolous, Kübler, Francois Guy and a few others. But there's a lot I haven't tried. I've only had one Jade (and I'm not sure which one it was), I haven't tried oxygenee, or TRUL (I doubt that I'm missing much here, but TRUL is one of the top sellers world wide - I'd like to know why). I haven't tried Vision (I hear it is awful but i'd like to try it). Over the past year we have sampled over sixty different brands of absinth at our parties. There's only about a hundred and seventy on the market. We try to bring new flavors to each event while keeping a few of our favorites. So how about it? What would you like to try?
