Re: absinthe mixed drinks
Mon, August 11, 2008 - 10:18 PMThe depth of licorice taste varies from brand to brand (and can vary even within each brand).
Try other brands/styles. Try to find one that doesn't go too far into the licorice zone.
If the flavor is too strong, dilute more.
Dilute with sugar if the wormwood is too strong.
As for cocktails... the only one I've tried was Death in the Afternoon, and I thought it was a terrible thing to do to a good champagne. -

Wed, August 13, 2008 - 8:54 AMI think I wasnt adding enough sugar into it.. I put so much in it that it had a very sweet taste to it.. Im surprised it didnt turn into candy -

Re: absinthe mixed drinks
Wed, August 13, 2008 - 9:51 AMDon't bother with the old sugar cube method ...
Make simple syrup
1 cup distilled water
1 cup sugar
boil until clear
let cool
put into sealable container/vessel
add 1/4 - 1/2 oz. to glass of absinthe
tastes much much better this way ...

Re: absinthe mixed drinks
Thu, December 18, 2008 - 1:20 AMI accidently mixed up two flasks we have (one for absinthe and one for blackberry brandy) one day on the way to Disneyland and the absinthe wasn't gone. I added blackberry brandy to it and it was delicious. I believe the mix was about 1/2 and 1/2? -

Re: absinthe mixed drinks
Mon, December 29, 2008 - 4:41 PMThe Sazerac
is one of the oldest known cocktails, with its origins in pre-Civil War New Orleans, Louisiana. The original drink is based on a combination of Cognac and bitters created by Antoine Amédée Peychaud in the 1830s, and is reported to be the first cocktail ever invented in America. [1] Since its creation, many different recipes have evolved for the drink, usually involving some combination of Cognac, rye whiskey, absinthe, pastis, Peychaud's Bitters, and Angostura bitters.

Re: absinthe mixed drinks
Mon, December 29, 2008 - 7:37 PMSome call it "Death in the Afternoon," and the right concoction of absinthe and champagne is magically marvelous. Still do the spoon and sugar cube and flame, and then pour in about two to three times champagne to absinthe: ABsolutely DElightful!!! But maybe there are other factors involved: the right absinthe, the louche, etc., etc.

Wed, June 24, 2009 - 1:42 PMHave experimented with Absinthe + Cognanc/Brandy (in equal proportion) over ice and maybe a little distilled water to tame it down some ...
Very very tasty ! And some non-Absinthe aware friends agreed that it was unusually good tasting ...

Re: absinthe mixed drinks
Mon, December 29, 2008 - 9:10 PMif you look through old cocktail recipe books, there are lots of recipes that call for Absinthe. A sazerac - a **wonderful** drink, calls for you to swirls some absinthe around inside a glass and then pour it out - just the amount that coats the glass.
Most of the recipes call for a small amount of absinthe - like the "Trilby #2" calls for a dash, the "Atty" calls for a teaspoon (the other ingredients total 2.25 ounces), "corpse reviver #2" calls for one dash.
At these very low levels, less expensive ingredients like herbsaint & pernod work just fine. And if you believe (as I do) that there is a unique 'something special' about the effect of good absinthe, there is far too little in most mixed drinks to get that effect.
The taste of (good) absinthe really can make a difference in a drink with just one drop/dash.

Re: absinthe mixed drinks
Sat, January 17, 2009 - 5:14 PMI am of the mind that if one does not like the taste of absinthe then you should simply not drink it rather than make horrid concoctions out of it. There are plenty of other things for people to enjoy.
With that in mind..... one mix I stumbled on in creative mood is a shot of lovely silver tequila mixed with a half a teaspoon or less of fantastic absinthe, Jade works the best from the ones I have tried so far, place in a shaker with cracjed ice, shake and pour into a cocktail glass.
The perfect balance of absinthe is essential. It should be a note and nothing more. Cheap tequila ruins the mix.
I call this a Ziggy Stardust.

Re: absinthe mixed drinks
Sat, October 3, 2009 - 9:35 AMA few years ago, before the wife and I knew better, we ordered some of the Czechoslovakian Absinthe. The stuff tasted like bile to me! In an effort to not have totally pissed away the money we spent we looked around for some way to make that horrid stuff palatable. Ironically mixing that "absinthe" with Red Bull, another fairly vile liquid, produced an acceptable drink. The revolting flavors seem to negate each other for the most part. Since then the bottles have shoved into the back of a cabinet, never to be seen again.
I firmly believe that life is too short to drink cheap quality liquor. However, if you come across an otherwise revolting version of absinthe mixing it with Red Bull might help.
We've tried the Le tourment and it's OK (too much food coloring and chemical aftertaste). We both like Lucid, Looking forward to trying the St. George when it's time to restock the liquor cabinet. -

Re: absinthe mixed drinks
Sat, October 3, 2009 - 9:46 AMLTV is not absinthe . it's a bullshit marketing scam . beware and spread the word .
most Czech.-sinthes are sheer crap as well ...
There is one called "St. Antoine" that is more like a real absinthe but it is not yet available in the U.S.
Lucid is pretty tame/boring/dry tasting unfortunately even though it is widely available ... it's what we call "starter sinthe" for newbies ...but I wouldnt even call it that because there much much better absinthes that i'd turn someone onto first ...St. George being one of them ... it's excellent absinthe ... -

Re: absinthe mixed drinks
Sun, October 4, 2009 - 8:51 PMYeah, we figured out right away we had been Czech-screwed!
Lucid is kinda like Patron tequila: there are better out there but it's an easy "fall back" if you're out and about and are in the mood for absinthe. Lucid isn't very complex or challenging, but it's also not a bad way to introduce someone to absinthe due to those properties. The name is easy for novices to remember too.
Regarding the St. George, now I'm looking forward to trying it even more than before! -
