Re: My current absinthes on hand
Sun, December 28, 2008 - 7:09 PMThe full-size picture isn't loading fro me for some reason.
The thumbnail picture doesn't show all of the bottles well enough to ID them.
It looks like Tourment Vert and Mata Hari, but I can't make out the others.
Will you please list the bottles you have? -

Re: My current absinthes on hand
Mon, December 29, 2008 - 8:07 AMSorry! It's loading well for me here. Anyway, they are from left to right: Le Tourment Vert, Rimbaud (an absinthe made by a friend), Mata Hari, Kübler, and La Fée. -

Re: My current absinthes on hand
Tue, December 30, 2008 - 3:08 PMI haven't tried the Rimbaud (no surprise there).
Of the remaining four, I think the Kubler is by far my favorite.
The Tourment Vert and the Mata Hari are varietals (mint absinthe? maybe, but not normally)
La Fee doesn't get many points from me for quality.
I can say that my first taste of my first glass of Mata Hari was repulsive. By the time I finished the glass, I went back for seconds... and thirds... and fourths... it grows on you. -

Re: My current absinthes on hand
Tue, December 30, 2008 - 3:39 PMI love Kubler and it's the best buy in absinthe, without any doubt
stock up on it while ye can

Re: My current absinthes on hand
Tue, December 30, 2008 - 5:09 PMI've posted my pic.
Of all that are shown, my favorite is the Grande Absente (then the Kubler).
The Obsello and the St. George are above average.
I've also had Pernod Aux Plantes, which I think is better than the Grande Absente.
The Green Moon and the Absento Carmago didn't make the cut - they are stored with my pastis.
I currently have back-up bottles for the Kubler, St. George, La Tourment Vert, Mata Hari and Lucid. -

Re: My current absinthes on hand
Wed, January 21, 2009 - 11:52 AMIs there a scale of the levels and qaulity control of the various Absinthes? Or is it a matter of personal tastes? -

Re: My current absinthes on hand
Thu, January 22, 2009 - 8:05 PMMy rankings are unabashedly personal. -

Re: My current absinthes on hand
Thu, January 22, 2009 - 8:23 PMMine, too. I have a good biochemical friend who has also checked out many absinthes and their thujone levels who says (and I have come haltingly and grudgingly to agree with him) that the thujone level has little or nothing to do with the experience of that je ne sais quoi sensation of absinthes.... -

Tue, May 12, 2009 - 7:13 AMHaving done similar tests myself, I have to agree. -

Re: My current absinthes on hand
Tue, May 12, 2009 - 7:33 AMThanks. And yet, and yet...all this being said, some (for me, home made by friends) absinthes have that "tingly" effect. Have you read comments on the "Thujone effect in absinthe disproved?" thread here, and what do you think? -

Re: My current absinthes on hand
Tue, May 12, 2009 - 11:41 AMAre you referring to the slight numbing of the lips and tongue?
One of the hallmarks of an absinthe, to be sure.
The presence or lack is one of the things I routinely mention in the reviews I've written. -

Re: My current absinthes on hand
Tue, May 12, 2009 - 12:15 PMNo. I'm referring to the slightly psychedelic quality, very subtle but noticeable, unlike other liquors. A slightly heightened sense of color, amusement, awareness, and connection. That's "tiddly" for me.... -

Tue, May 12, 2009 - 2:01 PMwormwood is what produces that effect . -

Re: My current absinthes on hand
Wed, May 13, 2009 - 8:50 AMYes! And -not- one of its constituents, thujone! That's why, IMO, the home made absinthes I've had that use the whole plant have the effect that the commercial ones don't.

Re: My current absinthes on hand
Thu, May 14, 2009 - 9:42 AMHow odd - I've never experienced such an effect.
